I remember when I was pregnant for the first time and read that for a woman over 40 (I wasn't about half that) the risk of Down's syndrome was 1 in 400. And it was considered a high risk. And now, the risk to any woman, no matter the age, to have an autistic child is 1 in 50? And no one is, as the first poster said, running for the hills?

On the other hand, in the playgroup I go to, the statistics seem pretty accurate. If that is because those moms are making more of an effort to socialize their kids or if that is the actual representation of society, I don't know.

I do agree that the spectrum is too broad to get a clear picture of what is really going on. I don't think most people have thought of the problems that such a wide diagnose of spectrum disorders could cause for the low functioning kids.

I'm going to post a comment about your blog on mine, to help get the word out. http://teachloveofreading.blogspot.com/Mary Leonhardthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13751249833273087756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441989712918579133.post-68842431037292234912013-03-22T09:14:09.132-04:002013-03-22T09:14:09.132-04:00I hate the statistics because they don't seem ...I hate the statistics because they don't seem to affect any change whatsoever. 1 in 50 should have us running for the hills in terror. I agree that the term "autism" is too broad. The symptoms are so varied from person to person that it doesn't make sense to call it by one name. I think the LFAs are swept to the side as hopeless cases or in the very least, minimally maintained. People want to hear about the Temple Grandins of the world. They don't want to think about the kids covered in "chocolate". haha I can hardly wait for Autism Awareness Month. mknecht24https://www.blogger.com/profile/17819582073139000178noreply@blogger.com
